Kamashastra - Solar and Lunar Breathing
Solar a lunar symbolism is very much a part of the Yogic, Tantric and Taoist traditions. These teachings identify the right side of the body with the Sun (solar forces) and the left with the moon (lunar forces). Tantra identifies solar energy with the masculine "fiery" psyche he color red, the element fire and the intellectual processes. Conversely, lunar energy is linked to the feminine "cooling" quality (soma), the color white, the element water and all intuitive processes.

Hindu Calendar -Panchanga
The Indian Calendar is a combined lunar and solar calendar as it is based on the position of both Sun and Moon. The Vedic culture expressed through the Rig-Veda employed sidereal time. When referring to the lunar cycle we take Tithi and Paksha and regarding solar cycle we talk of Sankrant and gate. Indian fasts, festivals and other religious occasions are based both on the Solar clandar (Solar ingress in the Mesh Rashi- Mesh Sankrant popularly known as Baishakhi) and the lunar cycles (Basant Panchami, Mahashivratri, Holi, diwali, Janmashtami, Ramanavami, etc as per the lunar calendar). Thus Hindus follow a Luni-Solar calendar and therefore festivals do not fall on the same date every year and have to be calculated.
